#1. Whitney Houston (1991)
On January 27, 1991, Whitney Houston was asked to sing the American national anthem. An interpretation considered by many Americans as the best. The voice of the deceased singer is for much, but it is especially the political context that plays.
The United States is in the middle of the Gulf War, the words of the anthem and the masterly interpretation of Whitney Houston have touched the heart of the audience. The singer also allowed herself some changes in the tempo. A risky bet but a winner. A few weeks after the Super Bowl, the song is marketed, it is a real success. Whitney Houston will donate all the profits to various organizations and associations.
#2. Beyonce (2004)
From the 2004 Super Bowl, we only remember the Janet Jackson controversy and her unveiled breast, but this year, BeyoncĂ© brilliantly interpreted the “Star Spangled Banner”.
White suit, powerful voice, she is accompanied by an orchestra to sing the American anthem in front of the fans of the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers. Enough to forget another controversy. In 2012, the pop star sang again the anthem but this time for Barack Obama … in playback. One of the few times in the career of the singer.
#3. Jennifer Hudson (2009)
This was Jennifer Hudson’s first appearance on stage since the murder of her mother, brother and nephew. In 2009, the former American Idol winner was chosen to sing the American anthem before the beginning of the hostilities. Dressed in the simplest way possible (jeans/t-shirt/navy jacket), it was with her incredible voice that she brought tears to the eyes of the spectators and athletes present at the festivities. She herself seemed on the verge of tears at the end of her moving performance.
#4. Kelly Clarkson (2012)
She had bet on simplicity and sobriety. Kelly Clarkson followed the disastrous interpretation of the American anthem by Christina Aguilera in 2011. The singer had indeed forgotten some words during the performance. Nothing like that for the Texan who assured with her perfectly controlled voice and an incredible accuracy, knowing that this anthem is known to be one of the most difficult to sing.
5. Cher (1999)
The eccentric Cher had left all artifice in the checkroom. Even her outfit was of a sobriety that we didn’t know her. And, it is in the most classic way possible that the singer interpreted the American anthem in 1999. A surprising interpretation that left many speechless. However, the singer showed that she could reach complicated notes. A real bet, a success.
